How cool would it be to think of your house as passive solar design, designed in a way to naturally soak up the warmth of the winter sun and then release all of that energy stored in the bones of the thermal mass banks as it sits positioned in such balance to create equality through the seasons to maintain a reasonable level of comfort all year round.
What needs to be done to achieve this? What information is there for me read?
On the New Zealand Energywise website there is a booklet called Designing Comfortable Homes which provides us with an understanding of the basic principles of Passive Solar Design, we also get access to some great data about insulation for heating and cooling as well as local climate conditions for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
The interest in gaining natural comfort by designing specifically for a result has gained momentum as people look to future proof against rising energy costs and future housing trends which could well see us here in New Zealand moving to a similar system that is in place in Europe where each home has an energy star rating, no different to the whiteware we purchase.
